The Big Woods Lake StoryWalk® is a free, family-friendly way to enjoy a book while spending time outside. Located near the Big Woods Lake Campground, the walk features picture book pages displayed on signs along the trail, with simple movement activities and early literacy tips included along the way.
The route is about 1/4 mile and usually takes 10–20 minutes to complete. Families can read the story one stop at a time, try the activity prompts, and enjoy a short walk by Big Woods Lake. The experience is especially fun for kids ages 3–12, but picture books, fresh air, and a little movement can be enjoyed at any age.
The StoryWalk® changes seasonally, with new books planned throughout the year. It’s a good option for a quick outing, a campground activity, or a low-cost stop while exploring Cedar Falls parks and trails. The route begins near the campground and follows a clockwise path. While part of the walk leaves the paved trail, it remains stroller-friendly.

Extend your outing: Bring binoculars and pack a picnic for wildlife watching. Keep an eye out for herons, eagles, turtles, deer, and a wide variety of birds along the shore and trails.
