With a mix of outdoor adventures, teen-and-tween-approved stops, and a downtown full of local shops and eats, it didn’t take long for us to feel right at home here.
If there’s one thing we love, it’s discovering those under-the-radar destinations that end up being total gems. And Cedar Falls is exactly that. Here’s everything we loved (and what you won’t want to miss).
EXPLORE GATEWAY RIVER PARK
Our family loves water views, so visiting the newly redeveloped Gateway River Park was a must. After a quick walk, it was easy to see why it’s such a hit with families. This riverfront spot has it all: kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing… and yes, even river surfing!
We didn’t get a chance to try river surfing on our March visit, but it’s definitely at the top of our list for next time! If you can swing by during sunset, the views are absolutely stunning. Even better, grab an ice cream across the street at Cedar City Creamery, a local favorite.
Don’t miss walking across the pedestrian bridge to explore the other side of the river. Be sure to check out the murals underneath the bridge.
Pro tip: Start your adventure by parking in the lot across from Cedar City Creamery. Super convenient for exploring the park.
SHOP AND WALK AROUND DOWNTOWN
Downtown Cedar Falls is totally walkable with over 30 locally owned shops and more than 20 cafes and restaurants. From charming boutiques to unique dining spots, it was easy to linger here awhile. And of course, we couldn’t resist grabbing some popcorn from Here’s What’s Poppin’ along the way.
Listen up, fellow book lovers. Cedar Falls has not just one, but two fun indie bookstores, The Nook and Books on Main, to explore. And right downtown, there’s even a public library with its own used bookstore, the Book Nook.
UNI BOTANICAL CENTER
Love flowers? The UNI Botanical Center is a beautiful little escape from the elements. Think gorgeous blooms, koi fish, and even resident parrots, Columbo and Chiquita, who are a total hoot. And yes, it’s all free!
HIKING PRAIRIE LAKES TRAIL
Cedar Falls has no shortage of scenic trails, but with limited time, we were looking for something quick and easy. The short, paved loop at Prairie Lakes Trail was the perfect choice. The first stretch offers peaceful lake views, followed by a fun bison sculpture along the path. Cross the bridge to the other side and you’ll find a fitness station before looping back. Keep your eyes open. We’re pretty sure we spotted a mink or muskrat along the way. Such a cool surprise!
Pro Tip: One of the trailheads and parking is by the Cedar Falls Visitor Center. Pop by to grab some info and postcards!
PLAYGROUND FUN
Looking for a great playground? Place to Play Park is definitely worth a stop. This all-inclusive playground is packed with features kids can’t get enough of: two ziplines (including a seated zipline swing), a merry-go-round, “mommy and me” swing, four-person seesaw, roller slides, and more.
We especially loved the two basketball hoops – one standard and one just right for the little ones and you don’t even need to bring a ball since they have some available to use. In the warmer months, kids can also enjoy water features and a sand play area.
BE A NINJA WARRIOR
Still have kids with energy to burn? Head over to Ninja U and let them unleash their inner ninja warrior. Founded by Scott Behrends of Backyard Ninja Kids, a five-time American Ninja Warrior competitor, this obstacle course gym is designed to challenge and excite.
Kids can test their speed on the incline, swing through obstacle courses, play dodgeball, see how high they can run up a wall, and all sorts of challenges to conquer. It’s the kind of place where they’ll have a blast and work up a serious sweat.
Bringing little ones? There’s also a dedicated toddler area, so even the youngest ninjas can safely join in on the fun.
GET ARTSY
Located near the University, the Hearst Center for the Arts is a great spot to slow down and take in some local creativity. The space showcases over 300 works from regional artists, with a strong focus on Midwest art. Although the museum was getting ready for a new exhibit, we did enjoy a photography display that was on view.
Before you go, be sure to step outside and wander through the peaceful sculpture garden.

One of our favorite things to do on vacation is spot public art, and Cedar Falls delivered. We found art everywhere – throughout downtown and across the University of Northern Iowa campus.

The Vibe Coffee and Ice Cream
If you love both coffee and ice cream, The Vibe Coffee and Ice Cream is a must. The space is cozy and super inviting – it’s one of those places you’ll definitely want to stay awhile. We couldn’t resist trying an ice cream flight (when can we ever?), and it did not disappoint. Don’t skip the raspberry matcha either. So good!
Hansen’s Dairy is truly a one-stop shop. Here you’ll find ice cream, hot food, a small grocery section, and even a gas station all in one place. Naturally, we had to try a little bit of everything!
From pizza and burgers to sandwiches and cheesy bites, there’s something for everyone. The made-to-order cheese curds were a standout – hot, fresh, and so good. And of course, we couldn’t resist ordering an ice cream flight (such a fun and affordable treat at just around $3!).
Whatever you do, don’t skip the ice cream or milkshakes – a must!
Tip: If you’re visiting between April and October, check out their dairy farm. You can see the animals up close—including a kangaroo!
Cedar City Creamery
A stop at Cedar City Creamery is a must while visiting Gateway River Park! Just across the street, this award-winning ice cream spot offers everything from shakes and sundaes to homemade cookies and snow cream. Since we’ve never had a snow cream, we tried cheesecake, Oreo, and Butterfinger. We also tried the black cherry frost and loved it. The portions are huge and a small was more than enough! Tip: They also have a drive-thru available!
Pro tip: Grab your treat and enjoy it while strolling along the river park for the perfect sweet-and-scenic experience.
Greenhouse Kitchen
Two things we love: healthy food and not having to wait for it. Greenhouse Kitchen checked both boxes and made the perfect lunch stop after a day exploring Cedar Falls.
We tried a custom burrito (which was humongous) as well as a mix of bowls: the Hibachi Bowl with steak, Green House Poke Bowl, Spring Roll Bowl, and a custom creation. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and came out fast. The mango sauce was a standout! If it’s available, don’t skip the crab rangoon quesadilla. So,so good! This ended up being my husband and sons’ top pick in Cedar Falls, and it’s easy to see why. Highly recommend!
Oh My Grill
OMG, we loved this place! Another great fast-casual find on College Hill, with super friendly staff and so many flavorful options.
We tried a mix of favorites, including chicken and steak shawarma, garlic fries, and a shared tray loaded with chicken tandoori, gyros, and more. It also came with plenty of rice and toppings, making it perfect for sharing if you want to sample a little of everything. The falafel were freshly fried and so delicious – definitely a standout! The mango lassi was a hit with the kids, too!
Cottonwood Canyon Coffee
Located just off the downtown Main street, Cottonwood Canyon Coffee was the perfect way to start our day. We had heard great things about their chai, and the chai tea latte did not disappoint. They also serve Jamaican food, which we’ll definitely have to come back and try next time.
Where to Stay
Holiday Inn Express & Suites
Our home base for our Cedar Falls adventure was the Holiday Inn Express & Suites, conveniently located right off Route 20 with plenty of easy parking. After a full day of exploring, the kids were especially excited to unwind and splash around in the pool.
One of our favorite perks? Fresh coffee anytime thanks to the fancy coffee machine with a built-in grinder. What a nice touch! Mornings started strong with a hot breakfast, and we kept going back for the biscuits and gravy (so good!) and, of course, those classic Cinnabon rolls.
